    ABOUT THE SCHOOL OF POST BASIC MIDWIFERY

    A midwife is a qualified practitioner who has successfully completed a programme of instructions (basic Nursing and post basic)in midwifery, is registered by the NMCN, and holds a License that enables her practice as a professional staff Nurse midwife, providing care for women during antenatal, intra-natal and post natal periods of the child bearing cycle including the care of the new born.

    In view of the above expectations, the NMCN in the effort to produce a competent midwife of high academic standard who at the end of the course will be able to mobilize the individuals and communities by utilizing professional knowledge and self help method to achieve optimum health reviewed the midwifery curriculum.

    This curriculum is specifically planned and implemented to meet the needs of the West African sub region particularly Nigeria; however it is maintained at an internationally recognized standard.

    By this special education, the midwife is able to make independent judgment, manage normal midwifery, provide appropriate care including family planning and refer individuals with high risk pregnancies and complications in other members of health team. The midwife is capable of functioning in all areas of clinical practice such as the home community, clinics and in health care institutions.
